What the Color of Your Period Is Telling You | LYNMISS

Jun 11,2023 lynmiss

Let's be honest—most of us don’t really spend much time thinking about what our period blood looks like. But if you've ever caught yourself wondering, “Why does my period blood look different today?”—you're definitely not alone.

Here at LYNMISS, we're more than just a period underwear brand. We're a factory with over 30 years of experience helping brands and retailers worldwide understand menstrual care and deliver products that truly work. So let's break down what your period blood colors really mean—together.

Why Does Period Blood Change Color?

Alright, quick science lesson—but don’t worry, it’s simple. Your blood has iron in it, and when iron meets air, it oxidizes—basically it rusts. That’s why fresh blood is bright red, and older blood can turn brown or even black.

So when you see brown blood? No need to panic. It’s just older blood that’s had time to hang out and oxidize.

Want to dive deeper? Check out our full guide on what color your period blood means.

What Do These Colors Mean?

Light Pink

Usually shows up at the start or end of your period. It’s often just blood mixed with cervical fluid. If you’re on low-estrogen birth control, pink spotting might be more common.

Bright Red

This is the fresh, “let's get this party started” blood. Totally normal. If you notice bright red spotting between periods after some steamy fun, your cervix is probably just recovering.

Dark Red or Cranberry

Classic period blood—healthy and normal. But if this shows up outside your period window, it’s worth a chat with your doctor.

Brown or Wine-Colored

Slow and steady wins the race here. This is older blood that took its sweet time leaving the uterus. Frequent brown spotting between periods might mean low progesterone or perimenopause, so keep an eye on it.

Orange

Not the best news. Orange blood, especially if it smells funky, could mean an infection. Definitely time for a GYN visit.

Gray

This one's a red flag. Gray discharge, especially with other symptoms, can mean infection or miscarriage. Don’t wait—get checked out ASAP.

What About Texture?

Period blood can be all sorts of things. Thick and jelly-like? Totally normal on heavy days. Thin and watery? That's your light flow. But if you see tissue-like clumps—especially big ones—it's time to talk to a healthcare professional.
